Lake Restoration Initiative (LRI) UPDATE February 2009
In response to inquiries from Paw Paw Lake property owners in the audience, both Township Boards discussed the LRI briefly at their regular Board meetings in January.
In summary, both Townships said they are discussing the petition requests with their attorneys and have the issue under consideration. It appears that both Townships are moving forward, but at a relatively slow pace. One person in the audience at the Coloma meeting warned the Board to be ready for very strong opposition to the SAD request.
Hopefully we will learn more from both Boards after their February meetings.
THE TOWNSHIPS ARE IN CONTROL NOW
WE NEED YOUR HELP – Attend Township Meetings
It is important that the Township Boards know that we are concerned and expect them to fulfill their legal obligation to the property owners that signed the petitions.
If you are able to attend a February Board meeting, please, ASK THE BOARD THIS QUESTION: WHAT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE WITH THE PAW PAW LAKE SAD? WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT? WHEN?
MEETING NOTICE INFORMATION
Regular Township meetings are held on:
COLOMA - 2nd Wednesday of the month (next meeting is 2/11/09)
WATERVLIET - 3rd Monday of the month (next meeting is 2/16/09).
Your participation at Township meetings will make a difference.
All future decisions regarding the establishment and implementation of Special Assessment Districts (SADs) for Paw Paw Lake will be made under the authority of the Townships Boards of Trustees.
Now that the petitions have been presented, each Township Board will decide if they choose to proceed with the process of evaluating the petition request. If they decide to proceed, they will hold public hearings on this issue. They will also listen to public comments regarding the petition request at their regular meetings. Those who oppose the SADs will be out in force enthusiastically asking township boards to ignore and deny the petitions. In fact, some people opposed to the establishment of a SAD were present and vocal at the December meetings. Those of us who support the SAD must be in attendance at future meetings to balance the negative comments with positive comments.
The hundreds of signatures on the petition will surely have an impact on the Boards’ final decision, but audience comments at Board meetings and public hearings will also have great influence on their decision process. It is imperative that those who support SAD are represented. All of us, our friends and neighbors as well, need to attend the Township Board meetings and the SAD public hearings to voice our support.
